My Approach
I begin with a field sketch that captures a moment. I render the obvious and the implied visual elements with pastel. Then I enlarge, exaggerate and translate to canvas. I apply more layers, more paint, more interpretation and more visual translations. Underpaintings, glazes and a variety of mixed media capture the dimensional life that unfolds, that when successful, is exposed as if it was always there waiting to be uncovered.
I listen carefully to my work. I sense a visual harmonic or voice that declares the appropriate time to put paintbrush, palette knife or my hands aside – yet the work is still incomplete. The work is now ready for it’s most important and final stage of rendering, interpretive rendering by you the viewer. Now it is ready to provoke and present itself in a very personal way. I want to immerse you in a scene, or a place that feels uniquely meant for you and you alone. Your only responsibility is a willingness to fully engage, beyond the literal. My work requires active viewing.
